Linda Richter
I am often asked “What do you paint?”. I hesitate to reply since my paintings do not fall in the general categories most people think of like landscape, still life, portraits, or even animals. I prefer to call it “nature portraits”. “Nature” because I paint birds or animals but also plants, flowers, and trees. And portraits because I like to get up close. Even to the point of cutting off parts and zooming in for a look at the eye. I like to paint a section rather than the whole. I want the viewer to concentrate on my focus rather than travel about looking for something of their own interest. I want them to think about why I cropped where I did and what I was trying to get them to consider. I don’t paint to represent a donkey; I paint to show the relationship between the donkeys.

My inspiration in my art is to take the ordinary things we see around us, and often just take for granted, and bring attention to them in special ways to show that there is more there to see and feel. The otherwise plain and simple can actually trigger strong emotion and attraction when presented in unusual ways. All of my art starts with capturing an image digitally, typically via a camera. Sometimes it ends there, as with my low light night-time imagery, and sometimes I take it further using proprietary digital painting techniques suited to the subject. But regardless of the techniques used, the end result is intended to pull viewers of my art in and offer them a new way of perceiving things around them.
